Are you interested in tackling key challenges in large (NLG) foundation models with a neuro-symbolic approach?

You’ll join as Senior Research Scientist, with a strong team taking a different approach to developing scalable, accurate and reliable AI.

Presently many companies developing large language generation models have developed solutions using only a transformer-based approach, which can solve challenges quickly but are mostly generic models, often sacrificing accuracy, creating hallucinations, bias and lacking trustworthiness.

This company is looking to change that. They are combining the latest advances in Deep Learning approaches, Transformers/LLMs with knowledge & graph based approaches and ML / Reinforcement learning.

Your role as a Senior Research Scientist will be to work on research in neuro-symbolic AI, knowledge and reasoning. You'll work closely with other researchers to drive breakthroughs in research, applying unique new approaches, solve various challenges and inspire the team to do the same. You’ll be designing & building architectures that can scale on extremely large amounts of data for the two main components of their system.

As the tech is still not super mature, you’ll have the freedom to innovate and experiment, making a true impact on the future of this product.

You’ll need a strong background in either Natural Language, with recent experience in Natural Language Generation (NLG) and LLMs at scale, including fine-tuning and/or pre-training. Or you'll have a background in reasoning (ideally symbolic reasoning). If you’ve built AI systems using GNNs and reinforcement learning or have a background in neuro-symbolic AI, you’re someone we’d love to consider.

As this is Senior level we're looking for circa 5 years in the industry, however, if you have a PhD with relevant research, we’d consider fewer years in industry roles. Research publications or patents are expected, especially those of relevance in Neuro-symbolic ai, reasoning, natural language generation or knowledge-based approaches. This company plans to start publishing papers in the future.

You'll be in good hands as your team is made up of great minds from various well-known companies developing AI systems – applied scientists, research engineers and software engineers. The founder was the creator of the technology behind one of the most widely used conversational AI’s in the world. This is a fast-moving start-up, so it would be beneficial if you’ve worked for start-ups (or a start-up-style environment prior).

The culture here is exceptional, if you value trust, and collaboration, and are a great communicator and innovator at heart, you’ll fit right in.

You’ll be financially remunerated with a base salary between £90,000-£120,000 (negotiable, dependent on experience). As part of your package, you’ll receive stock options, 25 days of vacation (plus public holidays), pension and more.

Whilst remote is considered for industry-leading candidates, the preference is for someone to be based out of their central London office at least 1 day per week. Visa sponsorship and relocation support can be provided if you are planning to relocate.

Apply today, or contact Marc Powell at techire ai, for immediate consideration. All candidates will get a response.

Are you looking for the next position you take to combine true impact whilst utilising the latest Language generation technology?

Join this tech-for-good start-up as an ML Research Engineer, building the first foundation model in their domain, solving an already large and growing challenge across the world.

Alongside their foundation model and first-of-its-kind dataset, which is their B2B market, they also have a B2C/Consumer app, which currently has no competitors (yet). So far their solution has been well received by those in the industry and those who are looking to access this type of technology to help improve their lives and wellbeing.

You’ll work on unique technology with impact. Building proprietary tech from the group up and leveraging the latest language models (GPT-4o and LLaMa). You’ll solve challenges on their core models. Your work with have a direct impact on making their models smarter and language technology more natural. Their unique dataset is constantly collecting new data, so there will naturally be some data collection, curation and processing involved. Some model orchestration and optimisation is required and they have a strong partnership with OpenAI for this.

You’ll be pre-training (including continued pre-training) and fine-tuning LLMs, large ones too; up to 70 billion parameter scale models. Your previous experience must include at the very least fine-tuning LLMs, but if you have already done pre-training that would be desirable. The usual Python and PyTorch experience is expected, with Deep Learning experience in the language domain.

The role is made up of around 40% research and experimentation, 50% ML engineering including model building, training, fine-tuning, and pre-training and the remaining 10% will be focused on deployments and inference challenges.

Your research work will be on SOTA Deep Learning, LLMs / Transformers and novel approaches in reinforcement learning for alignment challenges. Multi-GPU training will be familiar to you when it comes to model training processes.

This start-up is moving fast, if you have experience in start-ups or start-up-style environments, you’ll fit right in.

This is a hybrid role, in London for 2-3 days per week. Relocation support can be provided if you’d like to move to London.

The total compensation will be somewhere in the region of £200,000 - £350,000 for the ML researcher. For an experienced ML Lead, it would be up to circa £500,000. Which will involve a mixture of base salary and stock options along with the usual benefits you’d expect.
